Harold Johnson & other nature reserves in the vicinity of the North Coast
Harold Johnson Nature
Reserve is situated north of Ballito in the vicinity
of
Tugela. Open daily from 6am to 6pm. Zebra,antelope and
various bird-life can be seen. Picnic sites, cultural
museum and historical sites like Fort Pearson and
Ultimatum Tree. Situated on the northern side of
the Tugela River at Harold Johnson Nature Reserve. The
Fort was built in 1878 on a
bluff overlooking the Pont-crossing on
the Tugela River. Both of these monuments played a
significant role
in the Anglo-
Zulu war of 1879. It was built to replace Fort Williamson
and it was
here that the British presented the ultimatum to
representatives of
king Cetshwayo. A few war graves can also be seen on site.

The North or Dolphin Coast is also close enough to take a
drive north to the game
reserves in Zululand. The Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game
Park is
approximately 257 km's north of Ballito. Most of the big
game species
including lion, elephant, white and black rhinoceros,
buffalo,
buffalo, leopard an giraffe occur in the reserve. Apart
from game
